Samba de Caboclo Series with Rita Silva: Week 1

  • Esquina 559 17th Street Brooklyn, NY, 11215 United States (map)

This series is an invitation to move, learn, and connect through Samba de Caboclo.

Led by Rita Silva, you will study the dances, rhythms, and traditions that honor Brazil’s indigenous ancestry. This practice is shaped by a cultural blend of Amazonian, African, and Portuguese influences, and rooted in the meeting of Bantu spiritual practices and native Brazilian traditions.

Across four Saturdays, you will build a deeper understanding of the movement, musicality, and cultural context behind Samba de Caboclo. This is not just about learning steps. It is about connecting to the history, energy, and meaning behind the practice.

Each session builds on the next, giving you space to develop confidence, coordination, and a stronger relationship to the rhythm and expression of the dance.

All levels are welcome.

Rita Silva

Musician & Dance Teacher

Originally from Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, Rita Silva was raised in Afro-Brazilian culture from birth. Her work is deeply rooted in tradition, lived experience, and decades of performance and teaching.

She began touring throughout Brazil at a young age as both a musician and dancer, and was a member of Viva Bahia, one of the first folkloric dance companies in Brazil to tour internationally. She went on to direct and perform with companies including Zambo Bahia, Capoeira Bahia, and Bahia Magia, and was later selected by the Bahia Department of Tourism to represent Brazil internationally through performance.

Rita’s artistry spans folkloric dance, percussion, and storytelling. Her teaching reflects not only technical skill, but cultural depth, mindfulness, and intention. Since 1994, she has taught Afro-Brazilian dance across New York City public schools, universities, festivals, and workshops. She is also a certified Hatha Yoga instructor.
